In two separate cases, a Filipino non-resident worker (NRW) and a man from the mainland have been arrested for theft, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lei Chan Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect in the first case, surnamed Simeon, is in his forties.
According to Lei, an employee at a clothing shop last Tuesday reported to the police that clothing worth 2,500 had been stolen.
After checking the surveillance footage at the scene, the police identified the suspect as Simeon and arrested him in Rua Nova à Guia. Under questioning, Simeon admitted to stealing the clothing. He told the police that he had used a magnet to remove the anti-theft devices from the clothing inside the fitting rooms of the shop before stealing them.
Lei noted that the stolen items and the magnet were found in his flat.
In the second case, Lei identified the suspect as a man surnamed Li in his thirties. He told the police that he’s jobless.
According to Lei, Li attempted to steal 2,200 patacas worth of goods, including razors and sunscreen, from a supermarket in the northern district last Thursday. When Li attempted to leave the store, the alarm went off and a male employee attempted to stop him from leaving. Li immediately fled the scene instead.
Li was stopped in the middle of the street with the help of a male passerby, and was arrested by the police soon after.
Li and Simeon have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft charges, according to Lei.
