SJM Resorts said in a statement on Tuesday that it has awarded scholarships to 34 of the children of its staff members during its 19th Annual “SJM Scholarship Award Ceremony” at Grand Lisboa Macau.

The statement noted new scholarships to 10 outstanding students of this year and the renewal of scholarships for 24 of its recipients from 2019-2022 were presented at the event.

Designed to recognise outstanding children of staff to further their university studies, the statement said that 26 students applied for this year’s scholarship programme, with this year’s chosen 10 students being Zeng Ho Wun, Chong Pui I, Lou Ka Ian, Iao Kai Lok, Lei Weng Io, Sou Kai Kin, Chan I Kei, Iao Ka Teng, Wong Wai Hin and Chan Weng Lam. Chong delivered a thank-you speech on behalf of the recipients.

The students will receive an annual scholarship of 20,000 patacas until they finish university, according to the statement. Among students who had their scholarships renewed, Ian Cheng U and Wong Ian Kit were named the best performing students of the past academic year, and received an additional “encouragement award” of 5,000 patacas.

The event was attended by SJM Managing Director Daisy Ho Chiu-fung and Director Angela Leong On Kei, along with students and their families.

Ho was quoted in the statement as saying: “It is our wish that the students will commit to a lifelong journey in the pursuit of intellect and strong moral character, while consistently honing their practical skills. It is only through the combination of thought and practical action that we will be able to solve problems.”

She also encouraged students to be the torchbearers for the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, and emphasised the importance of understanding the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), the nation, and the global landscape, according to the statement.

The programme was established in 2005 and awards the scholarships annually to children of staff until they finish their university studies (up to five years). Children of SJM and STDM staff who are first-year undergraduates can apply, while scholarship renewals are based on the assessment of the student’s academic results, the statement said. Nearly 140 students who have benefitted from the scholarship have graduated from university over the years.

Moreover, the statement said that SJM has established scholarship programmes with local institutions, sponsors the full school fees of employees furthering their studies at Macau Millennium College, and supports recurrent education by encouraging employees to complete secondary school education at Millenium Secondary School.
