The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement on Thursday that members of the public should beware of the so-called “luck box” scam, adding that fraudsters in neighbouring regions have impersonated online customer service representatives and used courier services to randomly send the “luck box” out with an enclosed QR code that can lead one to be defrauded.

The “luck box” contains a QR code along with the message “scan the QR code to obtain red envelopes”, which will transfer its victims to a phishing website or a “brushing” scam group and be defrauded, according to the statement.

According to Wiktionary, “brushing” is a fraudulent technique in which an online seller sends out fake orders (such as empty boxes) and adds positive reviews about those orders, ostensibly from the recipient.

The Judiciary Police, the statement said, has not received any reports of such crime from residents, but urged members of the public to be vigilant when receiving unknown deliveries, and not to scan unidentified QR codes or provide personal information, credit card and bank account details.

Those suspecting they have been hit by a scam can call the PJ’s anti-scam hotline on 8800 7777 or the crime report hotline on 993 for assistance.
