MGM MACAU in Nape will have an area of 60,000 square feet (5,574 square metres) of its first floor turned into a new “MIC” (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions) venue, which is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2024, as part of its ongoing efforts to support the government in promoting non-gaming elements, MGM China Holdings Limited Chairperson and Executive Director Pansy Ho Chiu-king told reporters at MGM COTAI yesterday.

“MIC” is part of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions).

Ho met with the media prior to the lighting-up ceremony for the large-scale art installation “Valkyrie Miss Dior”* by acclaimed Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, a collateral exhibition for “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023”.

According to a summary translation by the integrated resort operator’s PR staff of her remarks from Cantonese into English, the venue will focus more on “MIC” to draw high value customers in MICE sectors. The venue will have a flexible layout with high-tech elements and will be used for shows and conventions, among others.

Speaking to the press at MGM COTAI, Ho also mentioned that 100,000 square feet (9290 square metres) of some of that integrated resort’s existing spaces are planned to be remodelled into something new. The theatre in the property, meanwhile, is set to launch resident shows, with details to be announced in due course, according to her PR staff.

Ho also spoke about MGM’s efforts towards community revitalisation, with the company taking its 10th International Lion Dance Championship 2023 - MGM Cup” to the local community, which is slated to take place from October 6-7 in Barra Square in front of A-Ma Temple.

Meanwhile, in expanding its source market, the company will keep an eye on the global travel trends and cater to the demand of the market accordingly to draw visitors in, Ho was quoted by her PR staff as saying. Reporters were also briefed on the hotel guestroom occupancy rate for MGM’s two properties, with both having recorded over 90 percent.

MGM holds lighting-up ceremony for ‘Valkyrie Miss Dior’

The ‘Valkyrie Miss Dior’ installation has the company again partnering with Joana Vasconcelos to present her latest monumental installation produced in collaboration with Dior, Paris, in Macau, according to an MGM statement provided yesterday.

The statement said that the company first initiated a collaboration with the artist in 2015 to create Valkyrie Octopus at MGM MACAU. The current exhibition illustrates the company’s ethos of “Art of Living”, blending internationally renowned art with the essence of tourism and lifestyle

Ho said in a speech at the lighting-up ceremony that Valkyrie Miss Dior is “a brand new reimagination of the Valkyrie series. After debuting on an haute couture fashion runway in Europe in March this year, it is now exhibited as a piece of public art in Macau, further enhancing Macau’s position as a diverse cultural tourist destination”.

The exhibition is located at The Spectacle in MGM COTAI and runs through October 8.

*In Norse (northern Germanic) mythology, valkyries are the female attendants of Odin, the god of war, who escort fallen warriors from the battlefield to Valhalla (a heavenly hall). German composer Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” (1853) famously features valkyries.
