Macau’s 132 hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 89.0 percent last month, a year-on-year increase by 50.2 percentage points, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

A DSEC statement pointed out that both 2-star (93.1 percent) and 5-star hotels (92.1 percent) recorded average occupancy rates of 90 percent, representing year-on-year growth of 6.8 percentage points and 71.1 percentage points.

Tourism industry sources told The Macau Post Daily earlier this week that 2-star hotels are proving increasingly popular with both mainland and Hong Kong visitors because of their affordable rates and improved guestroom facilities. The iconic 2-star Grande Hotel in the Inner Harbour area reopened earlier this month.

The number of available guestrooms grew by 37.3 percent to 43,000 at the end of last month.

The number of hotel guests leapt by 335.0 percent to 1.279 million in July. Mainlanders (946,000), Hongkongers (200,000) and Taiwanese (27,000) accounted for 73.9 percent, 15.6 percent and 2.1 percent of all guests last month, when the number of local staycationers dropped by 5.0 percent to 46,000.

Compared with pre-pandemic July 2019, the number of guests was up by 2.15 percent.

Guests’ average length of stay decreased by 0.7 night year-on-year to 1.6 nights.

In the first seven months of the year, the number of guests rose by 150.6 percent to 7.32 million.
