The Macao Orchestra (OM) held its season-opening “Lio Kuok Man and Macao Orchestra” concert on Saturday at the Grand Auditorium of the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM). The orchestra also introduced Taiwanese musician Tony Yeh Cheng-Te as the orchestra’s assistant conductor, according to a Macao Orchestra statement last week.

The concert marked the beginning of the orchestra’s new season entitled “150th Anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s Birth”.

The Macao Orchestra performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring Principal Conductor of and Music Advisor to the Macao Orchestra Lio Kuok Man and South Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo. The orchestra also performed Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise and Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Suite.

The Macau Post Daily published an interview last Wednesday with Lio, in which he shared his music insights and the orchestra’s new season.

According to the statement, the Macao Orchestra has appointed Yeh as its assistant conductor. The statement noted that Yeh will head the Macao Orchestra in efforts to promote local musical development and cultural exchanges, while injecting new vitality into classical music in Macau.

The Macau Post Daily featured an interview with Yeh in July, where he told of his extensive experience in conducting professional orchestras and his passion for music education among young people.

During an online interview with The Macau Post Daily yesterday, Yeh expressed his utmost delight in working with the Macao Orchestra. He highlighted the strong working rapport he has developed with Lio in the past and their previous collaborations with the orchestra. Yeh underlined, “Our past collaborations have been extremely enjoyable, and I believe that in future work we will continue to accumulate more experience and understanding. I also eagerly anticipate bringing more performances to all the music-loving audiences in Macau alongside the Macao Orchestra.”
