A local man and a local woman have separately fallen victim to a “fake police” scam and have been defrauded out of 68,000 patacas and 28,700 patacas respectively, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a regular press conference on Monday.

According to Chong, the male victim in his thirties received a call last Wednesday from a man claiming that he was an officer from the “Shanghai Public Security Bureau”. The scammer told him that a phone number registered in his name had been involved in spreading scam messages.

The fraudster then requested he activate the screen-sharing function on his phone for “supervision”. The victim later received several messages from the bank that money had been transferred from his account.  The victim finally realised that he had been scammed and called the police for assistance, reporting a loss of 68,000 patacas.

In the second case, the female victim in her thirties was cheated out of 28,700 patacas in a similar way last week by a fraudster who claimed to be a police officer from Shanghai, according to Chong.
