When a garbage truck was collecting rubbish outside the Horta da Mitra wet market yesterday evening, the rubbish caught fire, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement.
The refuse workers found that smoke came from dumped car batteries amongst the rubbish, and reported the case to the bureau.
Firemen rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. They suspected that the fire ignited after the dumped batteries were affected by pressure from other rubbish, the statement said.
The Horta da Mitra wet market is currently being renovated.
