Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs said in a statement yesterday that its officers have intercepted a traveller attempting to smuggle five endangered terrapins into Macau via the Qingmao border checkpoint.
The statement said that after the case was detected last month, the five terrapins were transferred to the Zhuhai agriculture authorities on Wednesday.
The statement said that when a man was walking through the “nothing to declare” channel, he drew customs officers’ attention as he appeared to be nervous, after which they found the five terrapins in his jacket pockets.
