The inauguration of “Audiovisual China – Stories of Macau” and “Portuguese-speaking Countries Exhibition Week”, organised by the National Radio and Television Administration and the local government, were held yesterday afternoon at the Pavilion of the China-Portuguese Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform at Forum Macao in Sai Van.

The opening ceremony also celebrated the commencement of TDM’s television broadcasts in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA), officially slated to start on October 1.

The event brought together representatives from the radio and TV broadcasting sector from Macau, mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as some of the world’s Portuguese-speaking countries, namely Angola,  Brazil,  Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique,   Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe, in order to promote knowledge exchanges and cross-regional cooperation.

The “Audiovisual China – Stories of Macau” project is co-organised by TDM, seven mainland Chinese provincial TV stations and seven Hong Kong TV stations, and will start broadcasting audio-visual works this month.

In the “Portuguese-speaking Countries Exhibition Week”, Portuguese films dubbed into Chinese will be broadcast on the Portuguese channel of TDM and Guangdong Radio and Television (GRT), with the objective of promoting movies from the Portuguese-speaking world.

Start of TDM broadcasting in mainland a ‘landmark’ for Macau’s audiovisual industry: Ho Iat Seng

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said in his opening speech that the launch of  the “TDM Ou Mun” channel on the Pearl River Delta Television Network was a “historic moment” for Macau, which “marks a new era in the development of Macau’s radio and television activities and cultural industry”. Ho said he believed that the launch would enable Macau to better integrate itself into the GBA and the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. “The development of the cultural and creative industry is crucial for Macau’s appropriate economic diversification,” he reaffirmed, assuring the public that with the full support of the central government, more measures of talent cultivation in the area of film and television would be introduced in the future, in order to further develop Macau’s cultural and creative sector.

Cooperation allows for better understanding between China & Portuguese-speaking countries: Cabo Verde rep

According to a statement by the organisers, the “Portuguese-speaking Countries Exhibition Week” project aims to enhance Macau’s role as a platform for cultural exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, which is important for the internationalisation of Chinese language films and media. The statement added that the project created ways for Portuguese speakers to explore Chinese history and culture, as well as opportunities of development in the GBA.

Margarida Fontes, director of Cabo Verdean Radio and Television (RTC), said in her speech that the Exhibition Week allowed for TV stations from the Portuguese-speaking countries to have closer contact with China, which would not have been possible without Macau being the cultural platform. “Through cooperation, the people of Cabo Verde and Africa in general will be able to better understand the beautiful Chinese culture which is until now still more or less mysterious to us,” she added, expressing her expectation to further collaboration in the field of media.

Cabo Verde is also known as Cape Verde in English.
