A local man has been arrested for cheating his girlfriend and her family members out of 1.48 million patacas in a money exchange scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference in Zape yesterday.
According to Ho, the suspect is a 34-year-old surnamed Iau who is a part-time waiter. Iau has twice been convicted for breach of trust, for which he served time from December 2011 to December 2013, and from September 2014 to March 2017. The four victims include his 23-year-old girlfriend, who used to work with Iau in a restaurant in Cotai.
In July 2017, Iau met his future girlfriend at the restaurant where both worked, and later the two became lovers, according to Ho. Last month, the suspect told his girlfriend that he knew some “mainland customers” who needed to exchange yuan into Hong Kong dollars for gambling.
