The Transport Bureau (DSAT) has announced that the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Rua Nova da Areia Preta (黑沙環新街) and Rua de Ma Kau Seak (馬交石街) has been converted into a diagonal crossing, which started operating yesterday morning.

A diagonal crossing refers to the arrangement when pedestrians are permitted to cross a street or junction at an angle, rather than following the straight lines of zebra crossings.

The adjustment was made after considering the road conditions, crossing places and the traffic pressure there, according to yesterday’s DSAT statement, which noted that this is the eighth diagonal crossing in the city to be set up at junctions.

The statement pointed out that the diagonal crossings aim at giving pedestrians the option of crossing directly across the street to the opposite pavement in a diagonal route, thus reducing the walking distance and time required.

The bureau stated that it has kept reviewing and optimising the city’s zebra crossings, with additional diagonal crossings having been installed at eligible locations since the end of 2021.

Avenida da Ponte da Amizade to open for traffic on Sunday

Meanwhile, according to a separate statement by the bureau yesterday, Avenida da Ponte Macau (澳門橋大馬路) will partially open to traffic from Sunday, when motorists will no longer be allowed to enter the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint and the Macau Bridge via Avenida do Mar de Espelho (鏡海大馬路), except for access to the Zone A construction site, or for authorised vehicles.
