Boosting the turnover rate of public rental housing was an important strategy to tackle the public housing shortage, Kwok Kwok Chuen, honorary senior research fellow at the School of Economics and Finance of the University of Hong Kong, said yesterday.

Kwok made the remarks on the sidelines of a seminar about public housing policies at the headquarters of the local branch of Bank of China (BOC) where he was one of the speakers. He had worked as an economist for the Hong Kong government between 2004 and 2008.

Speaking to reporters, Kwok said continually building public housing might not be the answer to the high demand for such housing in Hong Kong because of the city’s limited land resources and the slowdown in the population growth rate, which was a situation identical to Macau.
