A 53-year-old construction worker from the mainland who fell from a ladder yesterday near a bus stop in Coloane was confirmed dead after being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, according to a Public Security Police’s (PSP) statement.
According to the police, the incident happened at around 10 a.m. yesterday. The non-resident worker (NRW) was not breathing and had no heartbeat when he was taken to hospital.
The police believe that the victim fell from the ladder after receiving an electric shock when working, but the reason was still to be investigated, the statement said.
The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) said in a separate statement yesterday that if the incident turns out to be a work-related accident, it would follow up on the work injury compensation.
According to the DSAL statement, the bureau is “highly” concerned about the worker’s death, adding that all employers are required to conduct a safety assessment of their working environment and to set up construction safety procedures and supervise their employees to carry out work in accordance with their working safety procedures, in order to protect workers’ lives.
