A woman from the mainland has been arrested for stealing a purse she found inside a shop in Rua Vá Tai near the Barrier Gate checkpoint, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 57-year-old suspect surnamed Huang told the police she’s jobless.

According to Cheong, a woman reported to the police on September 18 that earlier that day she had left a purse inside a shop while shopping. After searching the shop in vain five minutes later, she suspected that someone had picked it up.

The police soon identified Huang as the person who had picked up the purse, and she was arrested on Thursday when she entered Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Under questioning, she denied theft but admitted to picking up the purse. Huang claimed that she was in a hurry the day she found the purse and was planning to hand the purse in to the police in the future.

Subsequently, Huang’s husband took the purse to the police station. However, upon inspection by the victim, it was discovered that a Macau Pass and several ten pataca notes had vanished from the purse.

Huang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to Cheong.
