The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast on its website yesterday that the Stand-by Signal No. 1 will remain hoisted today as Typhoon Koinu is moving westward to the eastern coast of Guangdong, while the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 was likely to be issued tonight at the earliest.
Koinu will move westward to the Pearl River Estuary during the weekend and early next week, and it is expected to weaken gradually, the observatory predicted.
Under the influence of Koinu and a northeastern monsoon, the change in intensity and track of Koinu was still uncertain, the weather station said. However, it pointed out that Koinu’s intensity was expected to weaken. The observatory also forecast showers and strong winds during the weekend, with northerly gusty winds.
The bureau also said that the northeastern monsoon will bring lower temperatures, forecasting that the temperature in the Pearl River Estuary area early next week could drop to around 20oC.
The bureau said it will closely monitor the latest development of Koinu and assess in due course the risk of a tidal surge causing floods in Macau’s low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the “Mount Fortress in the Moonlight” event at Mount Fortress Garden, which started on Friday last week and was initially scheduled to be held until tonight, was cancelled last night as the lighting decorations and installations there were removed yesterday due to the potential impact of Koinu, according to a statement by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) yesterday, which said that the event would also be cancelled tonight.
Starting from yesterday, the closing hours of the Mount Fortress Garden returned to the normal 7 p.m.
