The Judiciary Police (PJ) reaffirmed in a statement yesterday that they had launched a campaign in conjunction with local higher educational institutions at the beginning of the school year in late August,  aiming to raise anti-deception awareness amongst university students.

According to the statement, in response to the recently increasing number of students targeted by online criminals such as social media impersonation and phishing scams, the campaign aims to enhance young locals’ sense of self-protection, anti-deception awareness and network security, through a series of educational activities as well as the on-campus distribution of anti-fraud leaflets.

In the statement, the Judiciary Police said that up to the end of last month, a total of 17 anti-fraud open lectures and 15 booth activities had been held across seven  higher educational institutions, reaching over 18,600 participants including students and their family members. The statement added that the police have been carrying out training sessions specifically for faculty members and other education sector staff members, in order to explain to them the countermeasures for common telecommunication frauds and scams, as well as ways to protect students from crimes.

In view of the high risk that university students from the mainland are facing to fall victim to scams, the Judiciary Police also said in the statement that they have conducted a number of anti-fraud lectures exclusively for mainland Chinese students since August, in collaboration with the Public Security Police Force (CPSP) at its Immigration Building. More lectures are slated to be held until November, the statement noted.
