The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it will gradually replace worn-out fitness equipment with new ones in 20 sitting-out areas across the city by the end of December.
According to the IAM website, the city currently has a total of 74 sitting-out areas, comprising 64 in the peninsula, eight in Taipa and two in Coloane.
According to the website, some of the city’s sitting-out areas are equipped with fitness equipment.
Yesterday’s statement noted that the fitness equipment in certain sitting-out areas was set up many years ago and has also been frequently used, because of which they have worn out to “various degrees”.
The statement also said that some of the worn-out fitness equipment cannot be repaired because of the unavailability of parts.
Worn equipment in 4 sitting-out areas replaced earlier this year
The statement noted that the bureau has completed the first phase of its replacement of worn-out fitness equipment, which began in March this year. The first phase replaced a total of 30 fitness apparatuses with new ones in four sitting-out areas, the statement noted.
According to the statement, the bureau will carry out the second phase between later this month and the end of December, during which a total of around 160 fitness apparatuses in 20 sitting-out areas will be replaced with new ones.
The statement underlined that fitness equipment in each of the 20 sitting-out areas covered by the second phase will be replaced in batches so that residents can still use some while the work is being carried out.
Expansion from March’s plan
An IAM statement in March this year said that the second phase was slated to replace 116 fitness apparatuses in 16 sitting-out areas, but yesterday’s statement said that the second phase will cover 20 sitting-out areas where about 160 worn-out items of fitness equipment will be replaced with new ones.
Yesterday’s statement also said that fitness equipment in six of the second phase’s 20 sitting-out areas will be replaced later this month.
