Macau recorded this year’s fifth imported case of dengue fever yesterday, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement last night.
According to the statement, the patient is a 56-year-old local man who lives in a flat in the Macau International Centre residential estate in Zape.
The man visited the Taiwan region with his family between August 28 and October 9, during which he came down with a fever, cough and muscle pain on Saturday, the statement said.
According to the statement, the patient sought treatment for his symptoms on Monday while in Taiwan where he was diagnosed with dengue fever, after which he flew back to Macau that night.
After returning to Macau on Monday night, the statement said, the man “immediately” went to the private Kiang Wu Hospital for treatment, after which he sought treatment again at the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre the next day where he had his sample collected for a test. He was diagnosed with Grade I dengue fever by the Health Bureau’s Public Health Laboratory yesterday, the statement said.
Last night’s statement said that the man was in a stable condition, adding that he was resting at home.
According to the statement, the patient has told the Health Bureau that he was mostly out and about in Tainan during his stay in Taiwan. After returning to Macau, he had not left his home except when he sought treatment, the statement said, adding that none of his family members had come down with dengue symptoms.
The statement underlined that the Macau Health Bureau has classified the man’s case as an imported case of dengue fever after considering his travel history and the time of the onset of his symptoms, as well as its laboratory test results.
The Health Bureau has carried out measures to eradicate mosquitoes in the area around the patient’s home.
Dengue viruses are spread to humans through the bites of infected Aedes species mosquitoes.
