A local male student in his twenties has been arrested for defrauding a man out of 6,000 patacas in a currency exchange deal, Public Security Police (PSP) Lei Chan Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect is surnamed Cheong. The local victim got to know Cheong on an online platform.

According to Lei, Cheong recently agreed to exchange 8,550 yuan (9,400 patacas) for 10,000 patacas with the victim. However, after the victim transferred the money online, Cheong only gave him 4,000 patacas and repeatedly postponed paying the remaining amount. Eventually, the victim lost contact with Cheong and decided to report the incident to the police.

Lei noted that the police summoned Cheong for questioning on Sunday. He admitted to the offence.

Cheong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, according to Lei.
