A total of 10 channels equipped with an iris recognition system at the Barrier Gate Border checkpoint have officially been in use since Saturday, the Public Security Police (PSP) announced yesterday in a statement, adding that members of the public can register to cross the checkpoint through the iris recognition system when leaving and re-entering Macau.
The statement said that of the 10 channels, five channels are in the departure hall and five in the arrival hall at the Barrier Gate Border checkpoint.
The Public Security Police, which includes the Immigration Department, had been testing the system from June 16 to October 20, with a total of 81,854 people having registered their iris information, the statement said, adding that from October 1 to 20, there was an average of 6,533 daily users, accounting for 7.87 percent of the total at the Barrier Gate Border checkpoint.
The statement said that the police conducted four different stages of trials in the past six months, including internal stress testing, volunteer experience activities, open booking test activities and open trial operation.
The iris recognition system service is available during the Barrier Gate Border checkpoint’s operating hours from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day, while the on-site registration time runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, the statement said.
The Public Security Police and the Macau Public Security Forces Affairs Bureau (DSFSM) have said that they are studying the feasibility of setting up a number of iris recognition channels at various border checkpoints next year to further facilitate immigration clearance for the public.
