The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday that a new type of fraud on WhatsApp that has been circulating online claims that after receiving a message from an unknown contact and selecting the “block” function as recommended, the victim’s account will be hacked.
PJ’s Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre has not yet received any reports from members of the public, the statement noted.
The statement said that the function is a WhatsApp “security tool” where a reminder is automatically generated by the system when one receives an incoming message from an unknown contact. Enabling the function prevents users from receiving messages and calls from an unknown number, according to the statement.
The statement urged members of the public to be careful and to verify information from the internet to avoid being misled and falling into fraudsters’ traps.
If one suspects that one has been defrauded, one can call the PJ Anti-Fraud Enquiry hotline on 8800 7777 for assistance.
