The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will dredge Lou Lim Ioc Park’s pond starting early November to improve its ecological environment, the bureau said in a statement on Friday.
The pond’s water is murky due to silt and pollutants that have made their way into it through sewers outside the park that have accumulated for years, affecting its ecological environment, the statement noted. Most of the pond’s water will be drained to remove silt and miscellaneous objects that have accumulated at the bottom.
The work will enable sunlight to shine on the bottom of the pond and disinfect it, according to the statement, adding that it will be refilled once the work has been completed.
The statement said that the park will remain open during the period, but urged members of the public to avoid entering the work area to avoid accidents.
The statement did not mention the fate of the animals – such as fish and terrapins – said to populate the pond.
