174 local athletes to join 1st Student (Youth) Games in Guangxi next week

A total of 174 local athletes will compete in the nation’s 1st Student (Youth) Games from November 5-15 in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) said in a statement yesterday. 

According to the statement, Macau will send a delegation of 234 members to Guangxi, and the delegation went to Government Headquarters yesterday to bid farewell to the local authorities, with Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng handing the delegates the flag of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). 

Ho said in his speech that he expected the athletes to represent the MSAR with their best sportsmanship, show their own strength and compete for the best results after hard training for a long time, achieve honourable results for Macau, and make friends with their rivals across the country, the statement said. 

Ho said that the government will continue to support students and young people’s sports training and development, attach importance to the training of seeds, continue to promote various types of student and youth sporting competitions, and build a platform to train more excellent students and young athletes, the statement said. 

The Macau Sports Delegation will send 174 athletes – 90 in the campus group and 84 in the open group – to participate in 17 events, with five in the campus group and 12 in the open group, competing in 17 disciplines including basketball, football, swimming, table tennis, track and field, and volleyball, the statement said.
