The Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) is now ranked 42nd in the “2023 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects” for the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” subject, according a statement from the tertiary education institution yesterday.

Its ranking is “significantly higher” than last year’s, which was placed between 51 and 75, the statement noted. It did not elaborate.

The statement said that the global ranking is assessed by “a series of internationally comparable and objective academic indicators, which measure the performance of global universities in related disciplines” such as the total number of papers and the number of authoritative awards received by teachers. Over 90 percent of the total score is based on academic research, which the higher education institution consistently receives “outstanding results” in.

The statement added that in the “Evaluation of the International Impact of China’s Tourism Academic Research: A Statistical Study Based on SSCI Tourism Papers from 2001–2021”, IFTM ranked 6th in the “Affiliation list of authors (h index≥7) that published tourism academic papers in SSCI journals and its g index from 2001 to 2021”. The statement added this is the highest position for Macau.

IFTM professors John Ap and Penny Wan Yim King are also ranked in the “World’s Top 2 Percent Scientists in the Discipline of Sport, Leisure, and Tourism” recently released by Stanford University, the statement added.

Meanwhile, IFTM offers  Dual Master’s Programmes in collaboration with the University of Surrey in the UK and the University of Queensland, with the universities placed 2nd and 8th respectively in the 2023 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The collaborations open opportunities for IFTM students to “pursue global opportunities and contribute to the enhancement of the quality of education”, according to the statement.
