A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Enping and Jiangmen in Guangdong province on Saturday at 7:24 p.m. at a depth of 8 km, and it was felt in Macau, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Maoming, Yangjiang, Zhanjiang Zhongshan and Zhuhai, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). No casualties or property damage have been reported.
Enping is about 127 kilometres west of Macau, Jiangmen is about 63.5 kilometres northwest of Macau. The epicentre was located about 136 kilometres west of Macau.
Macau’s Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) and Hong Kong’s observatory said in separate statements on Saturday that they had also received reports of tremors from residents, adding that further information would be released after analysis.
The Guangdong Provincial Seismological Bureau said it launched a level III emergency response after the incident, and sent an eight-person earthquake scene work team to Enping to carry out observation, adding that it was unlikely that a larger earthquake would hit the province in the coming days.
