The first forestry-themed conference to be held in Macau, titled “Global Legal & Sustainable Timber Forum (GLSTF) 2023”, is slated to be held at the Galaxy International Convention Centre (GICC) in Cotai on November 21-22, the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) said in a statement yesterday.

The statement noted that the two-day conference, which is organised in conjunction with the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO), is themed “Connect, Cooperate and Share to Promote the Recovery of the Global Tropical Timber Market”.

The conference will gather government officials from forestry departments of a number of countries and experts, among others, for discussions on topics including the development trend of the world’s timber industry and sustainable development, through activities such as fora and forestry-themed exhibitions, according to the statement.

Moreover, the statement said that the event will see the release of out puts from two “major international collaborative research projects”: “About the Construction of the Global Timber Industry Index Platform” and “Research on the Collaborative Operations of the Blockchain-Based Timber Traceability System”.

The University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Social Sciences Associate Dean Cai Tianji, who participated in the follow-ups of the “Construction of the Global Timber Industry Index Platform” research project, said that it was a valuable experience for local research teams to work with an international organisation for the first time. He added that it sharpened the research and communications skills of the local research teams.

Moreover, with Macau’s MICE hardware and software facilities, and the academic circle’s active support, Cai said that the hosting of the conference is only the beginning and that more international organisations will opt for Macau to host specialised conferences and events in the future.
