During their visit to the Macau Grand Prix Museum yesterday with racers and riders competing in the 70th MGP, drivers Sophia Flörsch and Richard Verschoor, who will both be competing in the Formula 3 contest this weekend, spoke with reporters about racing in Macau and what keeps them coming back.
Flörsch, from Germany, told reporters that this will be her third-year racing on Macau’s legendary circuit and that she and her team will try their best in this year’s races. On what keeps her coming back to race in the city, the 22-year-old noted: “Macau is the World Cup in F3 and the race track is insane, it goes through the whole city. It’s super quick and super slow”.
“It’s just one of the best tracks I’ve raced on and I just love coming back”, Flörsch added.
In November 2018, Flörsch’s car flew over the barrier in a terrifying incident on the MGP’s world-famous Guia Circuit. The then 17-year-old suffered a spinal fracture in the crash. She made a complete recovery in the following months.
Meanwhile, Verschoor, who was the MGP F3 winner in 2019, told reporters that “it’s amazing to be back. I really like the atmosphere here and I cannot wait to go out on the track”, adding that his team would try their best to defend their title.
The 22-year-old Dutch national also highlighted the adrenaline that he experienced back in 2019, which was the first time he had raced on the Guia Circuit, being nothing like he had ever felt before. “It [the experience] was just incredible and I really want to experience it again”.
Verschoor also highlighted the race’s whole atmosphere from the pre-race shows to the respect that the drivers have for each other due to the scale and danger involved in what they are doing. “It’s just a unique experience”, he added.
The second weekend of the race extravaganza will take place from Thursday through Sunday. The race schedule can be found on the MGP website: https://www.macau.grandprix.gov.mo/en/.
