Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said yesterday during a regular press conference that a taxi driver asked his friend to lend him HK$100,000 and used a fake luxury watch as collateral in July last year.

According to Chan, a 34-year-old taxi driver, surnamed Chan, asked his friend for money but he showed no interest in paying back the money. The spokesman said that as the taxi driver kept using different reasons to push back the payback date for his loan and eventually lost contact, the friend went to a pawn shop to hock the taxi driver’s luxury watch. The spokesman pointed out that, however, the pawn shop told him that the luxury watch was a counterfeit. Suspecting that he had been cheated by the taxi driver, the friend reported the matter to the police on January 11.

The spokesman said that after identifying the cabbie, the police realised that he had already left Macau. The spokesman added that on Thursday, the taxi driver re-entered Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint, and was intercepted by the police. The spokesman pointed out that the suspect admitted that he spent a few hundred patacas to purchase the watch, adding that he also spent all the loan money. The suspect, who faces charges of fraud involving a large amount of money, has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).
