A paper titled “Optimising Resource Management for Shared Microservices: A Scalable System Design” by a research team led by University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Chair Prof. Xu Cheng-Zhong and FST Assistant Prof. Xu Huanle has made “significant breakthroughs” in the cloud computing field, according UM statement on Friday.
The team, the statement noted, has designed an innovative resource management system called Erms, which can improve the efficiency of computing resource use and reduce the CPU (Central Processing Unit) resource use by nearly 1.6 times.
The system is capable of “dynamically deploying resources and optimising resource scaling based on actual workloads, and, for the first time, achieving optimal resource management in large-scale, complex microservice scenarios”, the statement said. The team, the statement added, has designed a new set of scheduling strategies to optimise resource allocation for shared microservices, significantly improving the efficiency of resource utilisation.
The paper, which the statement noted is the first study to fully address microservice multiplexing scenarios, has been published in the leading computer science journal ACM Transactions on Computer Systems (ToCS), which has only included a limited number of papers from China since its inception 40 years ago. The research marks the first contribution from the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and can be viewed on https://doi.org/10.1145/3631607.
Prof. Xu Cheng-Zhong and Assistant Prof. Xu Huanle are the study’s corresponding authors, while Luo Shutian, a doctoral graduate co-trained by UM and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and currently a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, is the first author.
Moreover, Prof Xu Cheng-Zhong’s team was awarded the Best Paper award at the ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing 2021 for their paper titled “Characterising Microservice Dependency and Performance: Alibaba Trace Analysis”, marking the first time a scholar from China has received the award since the conference’s establishment in 2009, the statement said.
Both papers are from the team’s collaboration with the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Alibaba, according to the statement.
