The Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday that over the past week they had recorded at least 22 fraud cases involving the purchase of concert tickets on the internet or via social media, 15 of the victims were students.

The statement said that in order to be able to watch concerts at which their “idols” performed but where it was difficult to buy the tickets via the official channels, some fans still chose to strike deals with someone requesting they pay first before picking up the ticket “even though they knew that they were very likely to be defrauded”.

According to the statement, fraudsters usually told potential victims that they could sell them tickets of popular concerts whose tickets had already sold out via the official channels. The statement said that the scammers told the potential victims to transfer money to designated accounts first, fraudulently promising that they would hand them the tickets in person after receiving the payments.

After the victims made the payments, the statement said, they could not contact the scammers anymore, after which they finally realised that they had been swindled.

The statement urged residents to always buy concert tickets from the organisers or authorised sellers only.

The statement also said that those intending to buy concert tickets from someone else should not agree to pay first before picking up the tickets.
