A two-day conference called “2023 International Workshop on Wireless Sensing Technologies and Applications”, jointly organised by the IEEE Macau AP/MTT Joint Chapter, IEEE Council on RFID Macau Chapter and the University of Macau (UM) as well as eight higher educational institutions and enterprises from Macau, Hong Kong and mainland China, started yesterday morning at Regency Art Hotel in Taipa, bringing together researchers and visionaries to share their recent findings in wireless sensor technologies and their applications, according to a statement by the organisers.

IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers headquartered in New York City, RFID for Radio Frequency Identification, AP for Antennas and Propagation, and MTT for Microwave Theory and Techniques.

According to the statement, the conference aims to facilitate convergence of academia and industry for innovation in cutting-edge technology.

Wireless sensing technologies are the use of remote sensors to detect, collect and transmit information from the environment to a base station. Their applications span multiple domains including health care, transport and environmental management, according to the official website of the UM Faculty of Science and Technology.

Day one of the event was attended by about 50 scholars and practitioners of the field, including Ferran Martín, a Spanish physician and professor of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Perry Shum Ping, chair professor of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, as well as representatives of 13 enterprises from Macau, Hong Kong, mainland China and Portugal, according to the statement.

The statement added that the ongoing event also includes an “Industrial Innovation Solution” contest, for which each participant regardless of his or her sector identifies a practical problem and presents a corresponding technological solution. The winner, based on a professional evaluation process, will receive the event’s Best Industrial Innovation Solution Award today.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Founding President of the IEEE Macau AP/MTT Joint Chapter-cum-UM Professor Tam Kam Weng expressed his gratitude to the participating researchers and professionals for their contributions to technological advancement, envisioning the next generation of wireless sensing technologies to connect the physical, digital and biological worlds.

In addition to Tam, the opening ceremony was attended by officials of various public institutions including UM Vice-Rector Rui Martins, Macao Science Centre Curator Sio Hon Pan, and the Macau Post and Telecommunications Bureau’s (CTT) Information and Technology Development Chief Lei Kuong Leong.

On the sidelines of the event, Tam told the media he believes that wireless sensing technologies will change the way people live their everyday lives for the better. He singled out inductive charging and parking sensors as examples. He said that through this conference, he hoped to enhance “industry-academia-government collaboration”, and promote Macau as a platform for knowledge exchanges amongst scientists and enterprises from the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
