A 43-year-old male tutor was arrested last Tuesday in Taipa for repeatedly inflicting corporal punishment on and insulting a primary school student because he was dissatisfied with the victim’s performance, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Friday.
The spokesperson said that the local suspect is surnamed Lao. The age and gender of the victim, as well as the way the corporal punishment was inflicted on him or her, were not revealed by the spokesperson so as to protect the child.
According to the spokesperson, when patrolling in Taipa last Tuesday, PSP officers saw that Lao was pushing and pulling the victim outside a tutorial centre, during which Lao appeared to be agitated, while the victim was in tears. The officers then took the teacher and his student to a police station for questioning. They also told the victim’s mother to go to the station.
Under questioning, the spokesperson said, the victim told the police that Lao has worked for the tutorial centre since October last year. The spokesperson said, based on what the victim told the police, he or she had repeatedly suffered corporal punishment and been insulted by Lao at the centre.
The spokesperson quoted Lao as saying that due to his dissatisfaction with the student’s performance, he was again “rude” to the victim outside the centre. Lao admitted to corporal punishment and verbal abuse.
Lao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of abusing a minor, the spokesperson noted.
