Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes announced on Saturday the start of the three-month-long “Light up Macao 2023”, which presents an array of light and interactive installations, as well as mapping shows at 34 locations in seven districts in the Macau peninsula, Taipa and Coloane.

The event, which consists of seven subthemes comprising “Blooming Splendour” in the city centre, “Light Up! Porto-A-Ma” in the Praia do Manduco district, “Dancing Butterflies and Blooming Wonders” in Nam Van district, “Travel Around the Universe” in Nape, “Joyful Journey” in the northern district, “Fantasy Fairyland” in Taipa and “Coloane Ambassadors” in Coloane, will continue through February, spanning across a series of major festivities, including the Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (December 20), Winter Solstice (December 22), Christmas (December 24, 25), New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year (February 10), Valentine’s Day (February 14), Renri (“everyone’s birthday” on February 16) and Chinese Lantern Festival (February 24).

Themed “Dazzling Wonderland”, the event aims to enliven the nighttime community economy with greater flows of people in the city’s neighbourhoods by bringing out their “unique colours” under different subthemes, Senna Fernandes said during the event’s kick-off ceremony at the Waterfront Duet Leisure Area.

The eight-minute-long mapping shows in front of the Macau Science Centre in Nape and Largo dos Bombeiros (“Firemen’s Square”) in Taipa are scheduled every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every night throughout the event, while the show outside the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier in Coloane takes place every 15 minutes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. this month, except on December 24-31, as well as between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. from New Year’s Day to February 25.
