New Macau Association (NMA) activists handed in a petition at the Legislative Assembly yesterday to express their objection to a declaration of allegiance which candidates will have to sign to confirm their agreement with the Macau Basic Law and their fidelity to the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) if they want to run in the legislature’s direct and indirect elections.
The petition was addressed to the legislature’s 2nd Standing Committee President Andrew Chan Chak Mo, whose committee is reviewing the Legislative Assembly Election Law amendment bill.
According to the draft, candidates will be disqualified from running in the legislative elections if they refuse to sign the declaration or if their actions or remarks prove their declaration to be false.
