Sands China has recently garnered five Top 10 rankings in this year’s Business Sustainability Indices (BSI), including a Top 5 ranking in the 3rd Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI), the integrated resort (IR) operator said in a statement earlier this week.
The statement noted that the BSI rankings were launched in 2015 and are determined by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) each year, promoting business practices that contribute to positive social and environmental impact. The sustainability performance of 371 listed companies were examined this year, with the BSI rankings’ methodology analysing value, process and impact. A corporation’s vision and management skills, among others, were also included.
For its Top 5 ranking, the company, the statement said, is one of only five companies out of 38 that performed at the Pace-setter level. This designation, the highest level awarded in the Hotel BSI this year, means that Sands China has “built a mature, socially responsible management system, adopts a comprehensive business sustainability approach, and demonstrates corporate social responsibility performance that is substantially above average for a firm”, according to the statement.
The company’s four other rankings, which were also at the Pace-setter level, are: 6th in the 1st Global Asia-Pacific Business Sustainability Index (GCBSI), and the only integrated resort/hotel operator in the Top 20; 6th in the 8th Hong Kong Business Sustainability Index (GCBSI); 6th in the 4th Greater Bay Area Business Sustainability Index (GBABSI); and 7th in the 3rd Greater China Business Sustainability Index (HKBSI), and the only integrated resort/hotel operator in the Top 20, according to the statement.
Sands China ranked highest amongst all integrated resort/hotel operators in each category, the statement said.
The integrated resort operator was also awarded a Special Mention in the Environmental, Social, and Governance section (Hang Seng Index Category) of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ 2023 Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards.
Sands China Executive Vice President of Operations, Sean McCreery was quoted as saying that it was “very encouraging to see an improvement in our performance with Sands China added to one additional index this year, totalling five, and we achieved Top 10 rankings in all of them.”
