A casino dealer and a couple from the mainland have been arrested for scamming a casino out of over HK$100,000, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The local 36-year-old casino dealer is surnamed Mak. The two mainland suspects, both aged 27, are surnamed Yao and Tam. Yao, a non-resident-worker (NRW), is a waiter, while his wife is jobless.
According to Chong, the police received a report from the casino in the Inner Harbour district on Monday that one of their casino dealers, Mak, had intentionally given extra casino chips to gamblers. After scrutinising CCTV footage, the police apprehended the trio on Tuesday.
Under questioning, Mak confessed that he had conspired with the mainland couple since last November to defraud the casino out of over HK$100,000. The loot was then divided equally between himself and the couple.
Chong noted that the suspects would strategically choose crowded moments in the casino. At these times, Mak would exchange four HK$1,000 chips for two HK$500 chips from the couple, disguising it as a valid exchange.
The trio claimed that the stolen money had all been gambled away in the same casino where they carried out the swindle.
The trio have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing fraud charges.
