Macau track-and-field athlete Samuel Ip Seng Tou was runner-up at the 2024 Coimbra Provincial Track and Field Championships held in Portugal on Saturday, his proud father, Sam, told The Macau Post Daily yesterday.

At the same time, his father pointed out, he broke the 16-year-old Macau indoor track-and-field record of 1,500 metres in 4:12:73. The record time was 4:14:11, set by Ieong Chio Wa at the 2007 Asian Indoor Games.

According to his father, Samuel, who is currently studying in Portugal, set a one-mile Macau record at the World Road Running Championships in Latvia in October 2023 and set a new record twice in the year at the National Student (Youth) Games in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region last November. After setting the Macau outdoor record of 1,500 metres, Samuel broke the old record of 16 years ago by more than one second on Saturday. This is the first Macau indoor track-and-field record to have been broken since 2019. At the same time, he became the only male track-and-field athlete in Macau to hold both indoor and outdoor Macau records for the same event, his father pointed out.
