Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) Deputy Director Tang Yuk Wa said that as of yesterday three residents had moved into the bureau’s winter shelter to seek protection from the cold weather.

Tang made the remarks on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Macau Famine activity held yesterday.

In view of the Orange cold weather alert issued by the local observatory yesterday, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has opened its winter shelter in the E1 Bairro da Ilha Verde Building on 34 Rua Leste da Ilha Verde. The shelter is open daily from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the next day, until the mercury rises again.

Tang said that while the shelter can provide accommodation for 60 or even more people, the centre’s occupancy rate has so far been low, having recorded mostly single digit occupancy since last year.

Tang urged members of the public to pay close attention to the health conditions of senior citizens, of those living alone and all those who suffer from chronic diseases or are in frail health, and to take appropriate precautions against the cold weather.

Enquiries can be made by calling 2827 0939 during office hours or 6399 1963 during non-office hours.

The observatory has issued the Orange cold weather warning, which will remain in force at least during the next few days. The weather station said that the mercury was expected to drop to 5°C or even below today. It predicted the mercury to fall to 7°C tomorrow.

The temperature fell to 4.8°C yesterday morning, the lowest of this winter so far.
