A total of 13.5 million guests checked into Macau’s 142 hotels in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 165.4 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

According to a DSEC statement on Monday, last year’s number of hotel guests recovered to 96.2 percent of the level in pre-pandemic 2019.

Macau’s tourism sector was hard hit by the three-year COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022.

Guests from the Chinese mainland (9.8 million), Hong Kong (2.2 million) and Taiwan (256,000) increased by 154.6 percent, 876.3 percent and 559.8 percent respectively. Tourists from these three Chinese regions accounted for 90.7 percent of the total number of hotel guests last year.

The number of local staycationers dropped by 39.4 percent to 550,000 last year.

Foreign nationals accounted for about 5.2 percent of all hotel guests in 2023.

Guests’ average length of stay dipped by 0.1 night to 1.7 nights.

At the end of last year, the total number of available guestrooms stood at 47,000, a year-on-year growth of 23.5 percent.

The average hotel occupancy rate went up by 43.1 percentage points year on year to 81.5 percent.

The number of hotels rose by 19 last year.
