The recent works by 28 contemporary Chinese artists are being showcased at The Venetian Macao in Cotai for “The Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China 2022 (Macau China)”.

Housed in the integrated resort’s Cotai Expo Hall C, the exhibition kicked off yesterday and showcases oils, installations, and performance art, among others, chosen from the book “Annual of Contemporary Art of China 2022”. The exhibition is also a follow on to the previously held exhibition at Sands Gallery.

The current exhibition marks its 9th edition and is held outside of the mainland for the first time. It is co-organised by Sands China and the Chinese Modern Art Archive (CMAA) of Peking University, with the support of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) Library and its Faculty of Humanities and Arts.

The works, meanwhile, were curated by Prof. Zhu Qingsheng, an art historian, art critic, and an artist better known as LaoZhu, who is also the chief editor of the annuary, among other roles, a statement provided by Sands China yesterday noted.

The statement noted that the works displayed reflect the participating artists’ cultural and existential experiences with themes such as globalisation, the intersections between art and technology, the female perspective and urbanisation processes.

In a speech, Zhu said yesterday that “Macau is China’s gateway to the world, and it also serves as a stepping stone for Chinese contemporary art to the global stage. We are literally showcasing the cultural achievements of China’s economic reform to the world” by hosting the exhibition in Macau, which has an international art scene.

Moreover, Sands China Ltd. Executive Vice Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying-wai said in his speech that “looking back on 2022, the development of art had been hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the Chinese contemporary artists kept contemplating and making dialectical arguments about the era or the social environment that they live in. It is worth constantly reflecting on this development in art history as it has brought new insights within the world of art”.

The free-admission exhibition is on until February 27 and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
