The findings of a survey conducted by the local Sin Meng Charity Association show that 77 percent of the young respondents believe that the government’s continuing education subsidy scheme is beneficial to the appropriately diversified development of the local economy, while nearly 88 percent said they had participated in the scheme.

The association released the findings during a press conference at is headquarters in Rua de Pequim yesterday.

The scheme allows local residents aged at least 15 to get a 6,000-pataca subsidy to enrol in courses run by the city’s various continuing education institutions for a certain period of time.

Commissioned by the association, the Macau University of Science and Technology’s (MUST) carried out the survey last year both online and offline, and collected 1,009 valid questionnaires at random from local residents aged between 15 and 35.

The findings show that driving lessons, learning languages and Business Management among others, are the most popular courses, while 50 percent of the respondents sat a certificate exam. The association representatives did not say how many of them passed the exam.

The survey also found that 42 percent of respondents agreed that participating in the scheme would help improve their vocational skills, while 38 percent said they decided to join the scheme because they were eager to learn new skills to further develop their careers.
