Regarding the robbery case that took place in a jewellery shop located in a Cotai resort, Lei Chan Hong, a spokesperson for the Public Security Police (PSP) provided an update during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Lei, on Sunday a man from the mainland robbed HK$ 3.5 million in cash from the shop.
Initial police reports had put the loot at “over one million patacas”.
The suspect in his thirties is surnamed Liu, who told the police he’s jobless.
According to Lei, the incident occurred on Sunday morning when only a 35-year-old male staff member was in the shop. Liu entered the shop and threatened the staff member with a table knife, demanding money. Liu managed to snatch HK$3.5 million in cash from the shop’s safe and attempted to escape.
The staff member tried to intervene and was scratched on the neck and face during the altercation. He then shouted for help, attracting the attention of security guards from the hotel-casino resort who intercepted the robber.
PSP officers seized the table knife and a bag containing over HK$3.5 million in cash from Liu.
Under questioning, Liu told the police that prior to committing the robbery he had gambled away all his own money. He claimed that he was heavily intoxicated on the morning of the incident, which, he claimed, had influenced his action.
Liu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a robbery charge, according to Lei.
