An endangered camphor tree (Camphora officinarum) still shows signs of disease and pest infestation after months of treatment, while the crown of the tree has withered further, which could endanger pedestrians walking under the tree, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the tree is located on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida outside Lou Lim Ioc Garden.

The statement noted that the tree has been on the government’s official old tree protection list since September 2016.

The statement said that although healing measures such as pest control, fertilisation and medication have been taken in recent months, the tree’s growing condition has not improved.

The statement said that the bureau will continue to work with experts from the Guangzhou Institute of Forestry and Landscape Architecture to carry out inspections and monitoring of the tree, and to design a rescue and maintenance plan, which will be implemented in accordance with the experts’ recommendations.

Therefore, the bureau will carry out height-control pruning tomorrow, in the hope that the tree can regain its vitality.

The bureau pledged that it will continue to monitor the tree’s condition, urging the public not to enter the enclosed area during the pruning period to avoid accidents.

Anyone who finds abnormalities in a tree should contact the bureau by calling 2833 7676 or via the“IAM Connect” app, according to the statement.
