The pedestrian passage on the flyover connecting the University of Macau (UM) campus on Hengqin island and the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin joint checkpoint has come into use, the Macau government has announced.
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) made the announcement in a statement on Friday.
This came after the flyover had already opened to vehicular traffic in late September last year.
The flyover enables vehicles to travel from the UM campus to the Hengqin checkpoint more directly, a change from the previous situation in which they had to travel to Cotai via the underwater tunnel between the UM campus and Cotai first, only after which could they travel to the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin checkpoint via the Lotus Flower Bridge.
Vehicles from the UM campus can also use the flyover to travel to the Macau-side checkpoint zone of the Hengqin checkpoint, from where they can then travel to Cotai via the Lotus Flower Bridge, a change from the previous situation in which vehicles could only travel between the UM campus and Cotai via the underwater tunnel.
When the flyover opened to vehicular traffic in September last year, its pedestrian passage still could not be open because of the then still ongoing facility-improvement projects around the Hengqin checkpoint’s Macau-administered zone.
Friday’s statement noted that in addition to stairs, those from the UM campus can access the pedestrian passage via a lift. The pedestrian passage is roofed, the statement noted.
