Four people from the mainland have been arrested for aiding and abetting two illegal immigrants, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Leong, the Public Security Police in an ongoing investigation into an illegal immigration case discovered two illegal immigrants from the mainland staying in a Cotai hotel. The police apprehended the duo, a couple, surnamed Liu and Peng.
Leong noted that the couple had been banned from entering Macau due to their involvement in illegal currency exchange operations. In order to continue their illicit activities, they paid 38,000 yuan (43,000 patacas) each to be smuggled to Macau by boat from Zhuhai. This occurred last month, and at the time of yesterday’s press conference the police were still investigating the criminal gang that assisted the couple, Wong said.
The police later arrested four other mainland individuals suspected of arranging various hotel rooms for the couple during their illegal stay in Macau, as well as assisting them in the transfer of funds to pay for their illegal trips to Macau.
The four suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of aiding and abetting illegal immigration.
