The Transport Bureau (DSAT) has said that a number of businesses have told the government that they are intending to open shops in the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Barra Station.
The bureau made the remarks in a reply to a written interpellation by lawmaker Ngan Iek Hang. The reply was released on Saturday.
There are a total of 12 units at the LRT Barra Station to be leased out for shops and other retail outlets. However, none of them have been operating since the station opened in December last year.
The reply said that after the government-owned LRT operator began to look for companies to open shops in the station, several companies have informed the government that they are intending to lease units there. However, the shop rentals in the station are still under negotiation, the reply said.
The reply said that with more and more residents and tourists using the LRT Barra Station, the LRT operator expects more companies to be interested in opening shops there.
Last month, the LRT recorded a daily average of 14,000 passengers, an increase of just 100 from the 13,900 in December.
Apparently thanks to the operational start of the LRT Barra Station on December 8, the LRT saw a large month-on-month increase in passengers that month. In the previous month, the daily average number of passengers stood at only 6,500.
