Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) students Ma Yunqing and Wu Yanchao won Second Prize and a Merit Award respectively in the recent Second Foreign Language Award National English Translation Competition for College Students, the tertiary education institution said in a statement on Friday.

Ma and Wu are taking their bachelor’s degree programme in English-Chinese Translation and Interpretation at MPU’s Faculty of Languages and Translation, the statement noted. They were guided by Prof. Li Li.

The faculty’s Acting Dean, Zhang Yunfeng, noted the faculty’s commitment to nurturing highly skilled professionals in Language and Translation, with a focus on cultivating broad academic perspectives and solid language skills, according to the statement.

The statement said that second prize winner Ma emphasised that the artificial intelligence (AI) era has brought both challenges and opportunities to the language translation profession. He underscored the importance of creativity and judgment as vital competencies in the field of translation, the statement added.

The statement noted that the contest, which was organised by the Centre for Asia and Pacific of the China International Communications Group, had over 40,000 participants across the nation. Its primary objective was to “enhance the English language application skills of students in higher education institutions while promoting Chinese stories and effectively disseminating the Chinese voice”.
