Hong Kong-based US artist Nissa Kauppila is showcasing her Chinese watercolours, along with inks on Chinese rice paper, at Amagao Gallery in the Artyzen Grand Lapa hotel in Nape.

The gallery is located in the hotel’s lobby and is jointly managed by the hotel and Galeria 57 Macau Limitada.

The artist, who was born in Monkton, Vermont, is showcasing paintings inspired by her first trip to Portugal, alongside works that she was inspired to create in Hong Kong, the mainland, and South East Asia, as well as other regions, according to a statement provided by the gallery.

Each painting, the statement said, is titled using geographic coordinates that either refer to the exact location where wildlife was observed or where Kauppila was painting at the time. Titling the works in this way enables “the painting to speak in terms of location and observation”, according to the statement.

The statement noted that Kauppila’s works explore the use of line and colour as “tendrils of tension while embodying a sense of wonderment for the natural world”.

Her works have been showcased in China, including in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macau and Taipei, as well as overseas such as in Atlanta, Hamburg, London, New York, Seoul, and Singapore.

The exhibition is on until March 24 and one can visit the gallery from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free.
