The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it has ordered local wholesalers and retailers to stop supplying and selling Taiwan-made Hsia Wei Hsien’s shrimp strips snacks as they may contain Sudan red, a non-permitted food colouring agent.

In the statement, the bureau urged the public to stop eating the prepacked snack product.

According to the statement, the problematic product has a spicy flavour, with package specifications of 60g, 80g, 115g and 300g, and expiry dates from September 8 to October 2 this year for the respective batches.

The statement noted that upon having been notified by Taiwan’s regional health authorities that the snack product may contain Sudan red, an industrial chemical pigment prohibited for use in any food in Macau, the bureau has issued a food alert to warn anyone who is in possession of the product to stop selling or eating it. In response to the warning, inspections are being carried out by IAM officials in the market.

The bureau reassured the public that follow-up inspections will be carried out in order to prevent the product’s sales in Macau.
